For this reason, in cooperation with the European Forum of Deposit Insurers (EFDI) and USAID we organize an international Conference entitled “Financial Stability in South-Eastern Europe: Impact of the Core Principles For Effective Deposit Insurance Systems and the new EU Directive on Deposit Guarantee”, in Sarajevo in the period from 8-9 December 2011.

On the occasion of 31st October, the World Savings Day, with greetings to the banks and depositors, Deposit Insurance Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina gives an overview of some of its activities and development of deposit categories.

Deposit Insurance Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina is established by the Law on Deposit Insurance in Banks of Bosnia and Herzegovina – Official Gazette no. 20/02, 18/05, 100/08 i 75/09. Out of the initial 4 Members Bank which were admitted into the deposit insurance program on 1 Feb 2001, deposit insurance scheme has 25 Member Banks as per 30 Sep 2011.

There are currently 3 banks within the analysis process being eligible for admission into deposit insurance membership, thus it is expected that number of member banks will increase in the next period.

Savings being the most important segment of bank deposits, as per 30 Sep 2011 record increase of 6.7% compared to the end of 2010. Monitoring of this deposit category is carried out on a weekly basis and increase in this category is constantly noticeable. As per 30 Sep 2011, savings of private clients amounted to KM 6.98 billion, which has largely exceeded the amount of balance as per 30 Sep 2008. (KM 5.8 billion including accrued unpaid interest) and the same is higher by 18.9% compared to the period before the “crisis of depositors”.

Public confidence in the banking system is best illustrated by an increase in savings by periods. The existence of the Deposit Insurance Agency as part of the overall financial system and guarantor for the payment of insured deposits, which currently amounts to KM 35 thousand per depositor per Member Bank , is one of the most important factors to restore public confidence and placing free money in the banks in BiH that are Members of the Agency.                  Predominant share of Member Banks of the DIABH is shown in the amount of total deposits as well as in the amount of savings deposits (98.8% private clients’ savings is in the Member Banks).

The composition of the Management Board of Deposit Insurance Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina was changed on 19 April 2011 in regard to the member who is appointed by the Ministry of Finance of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
