Sarajevo, December 19, 2019 – With a view to developing a secure and sound financial system in BiH, the United States Organization for International Development (USAID) and the Deposit Insurance Agency (DIA) concluded a Memorandum of Understanding today.

This document, signed on behalf of the USAID / BiH by Mission Director Nancy Eslick and DIA Director, Krešimir Šoljić, defines the cooperation of the two agencies and the continued involvement of USAID as an advisory board member of the Deposit Insurance Agency.

Expressing her satisfaction with the signed Memorandum, USAID-BiH Director, Nancy Eslick reminded that the cooperation of the two agencies lasted more than twenty years and that it was impressive to see the progress in DIA during this period.

– The stability of the financial sector in BiH is one of the priorities of US support, and it is precisely the Deposit Insurance Agency that plays a key role in addressing potential problems that banks may find. This agreement we signed today shows that together we will make great strides on BiH’s path to full alignment with international deposit insurance standards, and create a future where confidence of BiH citizens in their banking system will parry to any other system in Europe, Eslick emphasized.

Signing the Memorandum, Krešimir Šoljić, Director of the DIA, emphasized that signing the Memorandum of Understanding today is only a continuation of successful cooperation between the Deposit Insurance Agency of BiH (DIA) and the USAID, which has lasted over two decades.

– DIA has successfully implemented numerous projects with USAID partners in the aforementioned period, with the aim of further improving the deposit insurance scheme and aligning it with European standards and best international practices.
As a serious partner, by continuing its cooperation with the USAID, DIA reaffirms its commitment to further aligning its operations with the requirements laid down in European directives and Core Principles on deposit insurance, thereby also making progress in this area for BiH membership in the EU.
We hope that the anticipated adoption of the Law on Deposit Insurance in Banks of BiH will be finished and it’ll complete out all the efforts and progress we have made towards harmonizing our deposit insurance scheme, and by that our scheme will be complemented and we can parry with any system in Europe and beyond.
